Building Tolerance and Acceptance Through Learning about the Diversity of Indonesian Society in the School Environment

This article delves into the significant role of diversity education in cultivating tolerance and acceptance within the school environment in Indonesia. By examining the gap between the idealism of diversity education and its practical implementation, this article identifies supportive factors such as an inclusive curriculum and teachers as behavioral role models. In contrast, inhibiting factors such as biases and stereotypes must be addressed to achieve these objectives. In terms of research methodology, a literature review approach is employed to analyze data from various credible sources, including scholarly journals and official documents. The analysis results uncover that diversity education has the potential to enhance students’ understanding, empathy, and conflict resolution skills. Consequently, collaborative efforts involving schools, communities, and stakeholders are imperative to tackle challenges and fully leverage the contributions of diversity education in fostering a more tolerant and inclusive society in Indonesia.
