Understanding Plagiarism
Plagiarism is defined as the use of ideas, information, or direct quotations from another source without appropriate acknowledgment. Even if it occurs unintentionally, plagiarism constitutes a serious breach of academic ethics and is unacceptable in scholarly publications.
Citing Sources
-
Specific Information: If specific details such as names, dates, locations, statistics, or other precise information are derived from a particular source, you must provide a citation. Exceptions are made for information that is considered common knowledge—data widely available in numerous sources or universally known, like the fact that Paris is the capital of France.
-
Ideas: When drawing upon or adapting ideas from another author, you must cite the original source. This includes ideas about data interpretation, methodology, or conclusions. Even if you extend or develop the idea further, you must still credit the original author. In your manuscript, cite the original source first, then describe your own development of the idea.
-
Direct Quotations: Whenever you use a direct quotation of four or more consecutive words from another author, you must use quotation marks and include a citation. Simply providing a citation without quotation marks is not sufficient.
